100 Reasons The Mets Make Me Miserable

100 Reasons The Mets Make Me Miserable

By: robertjames | August 18, 2010 | 0 Comments

F@#* it. I mean really. I’ve been apathetic about this team for quite some time. Part of it is the mongo fans who have bought into the Kool Aid the cheap or insolvent ownership is selling. But the greater part of it is the cheap or insolvent ownership, and their puppet, Omar Minaya, and manager, Jerry Manuel. I know Manuel is bad, but ownership is so much worse that it’s almost impossible to hold him accountable. A list of the worst of the worst about this franchise now and going [...]

Mets Get Responsible When It Doesn’t Matter, or The Trade that Wasn’t

Mets Get Responsible When It Doesn’t Matter, or The Trade that Wasn’t

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Mets had the opportunity to deal the increasingly redundant Rod Barajas, but the trade went DOA when the team placed Barajas on the DL with an oblique strain. This is extremely puzzling. Barajas hasn’t been a power threat since May and should unquestionably be hitting 9th in the lineup, if at all. His place on the roster is questionable, as the defensively solid Henry Blanco makes him utterly unnecessary. With the arrival of Josh Thole providing a superior presence in the lineup, it seems like [...]

Around the Blogosphere

Around the Blogosphere

While we at Surviving the Citi have been relaxing, the Mets have put together a nice little month of June. They’ve rode an eight game winning streak on the way to a 13-4 record. The foundation of Wright and Reyes, thought to be shaky after last season’s fiasco, is not cracked, says Tyler Kepner of the New York Times. But this current hot streak shouldn’t make us forget how stupid organizational management has been, writes Sam Page on Amazin’ Avenue.
The Mets finally did the right thing and sent Jenrry Mejiia [...]

Mike Hessman, the Mets Bad-Ass Buffalo Bison Slugger

Mike Hessman, the Mets Bad-Ass Buffalo Bison Slugger

Today’s an off-day for the Mets, but SNY is not devoid of baseball. This afternoon SNY aired a Triple-A game between the Buffalo Bisons, New York’s AAA affiliate, and the Syracuse Chiefs, Stephen Strasburg’s practice buddies.
Strasburg pitched his final tune-up before his highly anticipated Major League debut for the Nationals sometime next week. Strasburg was dominant as usual, pitching 5 scoreless innings and striking out 5 with only 1 walk and 3 hits allowed. But this is the fifth dominant start I’ve seen Strasburg pitch on TV at the AAA [...]

Surviving the Midwest?

Surviving the Midwest?

Over the last few years a couple of friends and I have tried to tackle at least one new ballpark a season. Tomorrow we embark on a journey to the Midwest. First stop? Wrigley Field on Friday to take in an afternoon of one of baseball’s greatest rivalries, the Cubs versus the Cardinals. It’ll be my second trip to the “Friendly Confines” but the first for some. Bags will be played and Old Style will be imbibed.
Next up is a trip to Milwaukee to see my beloved Mets take on [...]

Tim McCarver’s Subway Series Summary

Tim McCarver’s Subway Series Summary

Saturday night, Joe and I had the privilege of announcing the Yankees vs. Mets Subway Series game from Citi Field on Fox Sports. It’s always exciting when me and Joe get to offer some unbiased Yankee/DJ♥ analysis and pious commentary, respectively.
When I saw the umpiring crew, I did not know what to expect, and that in itself is unexpected, since I’m famous for first guessing every play. The night before, my beloved Jeter’s intangibles were unable to sway the umpire to call a borderline pitch a ball. What’s the world [...]

Do You Smell What The Rod Is Cookin’?

Do You Smell What The Rod Is Cookin’?

Rod Roddy Piper, Bod Rarajas, Baja Fresh, In Rod We Trust, Inanimate Carbon Rod, Rod the Bod. You may have stumbled across some of the aforementioned nicknames in this early season to describe none other than Mets catcher Rod Barajas. In his brief tenure with the Mets, his penchant for getting some big time hits has helped him achieve cult like status amongst the fan base.
The California native is known for his “all or nothing” approach at the plate, and his career numbers support that (slash line of .240 / [...]

Bad Stuff For High Prices

Bad Stuff For High Prices

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet is pretty much the greatest store in the history of man. Its slogan is “Good Stuff Cheap” and as I walked around the store in Watertown on Saturday afternoon, I was delighted to see a Wii Zapper for $5, big garden fertilizer bags for $8.99, and the Sarah Palin autobiography for $2 in the bargain books section (if that’s your sort of thing; it’s not mine). Ollie’s even gives complementary cups of coffee to shoppers as they wander around the store. It’s the generic version of Big [...]

The “Reyes Run”

By: Brendan Bilko | May 18, 2010

The “Reyes Run”

Last night, Jose Reyes led off the sixth inning by hitting a 3-1 pitch up the middle for a single. In the subsequent at bat, Luis Castillo took one pitch before sac bunting Reyes over to second base. Reyes then stole third base in the next at bat, before ultimately scoring on a Chris Carter ground out following a walk by Jason Bay.  Ah, the “Reyes Run.” While the result was fine, the process (especially in last night’s particular instance) is unbelievably flawed.
Aside from the obvious (giving the opposition a [...]
